The general functions make day-to-day work in Autodesk Revit easier with practical automations and visual aids. From colour-coded tabs for a better overview of open documents, to the display of the current editor, right through to the automatic determination of elevations and component orientations – these tools save time and reduce sources of error in day-to-day design work.
General Functions
The general functions support you in your daily work in Revit.
Colored Tabs

The Coloured Tabs feature displays the tabs in Autodesk Revit in different colours depending on the document that is open.
This makes it possible to distinguish between multiple projects, families or views that are open at the same time at a glance. This reduces the risk of confusion, improves clarity and makes day-to-day work considerably easier, particularly when working on multiple Revit documents simultaneously.
Advantages:
- Faster visual orientation
- Fewer accidental clicks between similar projects
- A better overview when you have lots of tabs open
Opening Direction

The Opening Direction function automatically assigns information to openings such as windows and doors indicating whether the respective object is mirrored or not.
Based on this information, the direction of opening (right or left) is clearly determined and displayed. This makes it immediately clear how the opening in the building behaves – without the need for manual checks or additional parameter queries.
Advantages:
- Clear indication of the direction of travel (left / right)
- Automatic analysis of reflections
- Fewer errors in planning, evaluation and labelling
Element Orientation

The Component Orientation function automatically determines the alignment of walls, windows and doors relative to true north and writes this information directly into the relevant components.
This means that the orientation data is always available for analysis, labelling and further processing without the need for manual identification.
Advantages:
- Standardised orientation information based on true north
- Automatic populating of component information
- A better basis for analysis and planning
Current User

The Current User function lets you see at a glance who is currently editing a drawing or Revit document.
This makes it immediately clear whether a project has already been opened by another user or is currently being worked on. This helps to avoid conflicts, improve coordination and make collaborative work within the team more efficient.
Advantages:
- Transparency in project management
- Fewer overlaps and locking conflicts
- Better teamwork
